Frequently asked questions.
Working Together
-
We work with people ages 55 to 70 who are within about five to ten years of retirement or already retired. We also work with retirees who want a second look at their strategy. Most of our clients have saved $1 million or more across 401(k)s, IRAs, brokerage accounts, and sometimes pensions or rental property. They have done the saving. What they want now are clear answers: how much they can spend, which accounts to draw from, and how to keep taxes from working against the plan. Learn more on our Who We Serve page.

We do not have a formal asset minimum. Our services are built for households with significant retirement decisions in front of them, and our fees reflect that. Our wealth management is priced as a percentage of the assets we manage. Our planning services carry flat fees. For most people, the fit is strongest when they have around $1 million or more saved for retirement, or when they face connected decisions like Roth conversions, pension elections, and Social Security timing. If you are earlier in your savings years, we are glad to point you toward resources that fit where you are. See our full Services and Fees.

No. Our office is at 134 S. Glassell St. in Orange, CA, and we meet with local clients in person or by video. We also work virtually with clients in more than 30 states.
-
No. Many clients start working with us five to ten years before retirement, because many of the highest-impact decisions get made in that window. Those include when to stop working, when to claim Social Security, whether to do Roth conversions before required minimum distributions begin, and how to turn savings into a reliable paycheck. We also work with people who are already retired and want to review their approach.
Fiduciary Duty and Fees
-
Yes. Keep It Simple Financial Planning is a fee-only Registered Investment Adviser, and our founder, Jason Hamilton, is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional. We are required to act in your best interest, and we put that standard at the center of every recommendation. We do not sell products, earn commissions, or receive payments from fund companies or insurance carriers. Our advice is the only thing we are paid for.
-
Financial advisors are generally paid in one of three ways. Commission-based advisors are paid by the companies whose products they sell. Fee-based advisors charge fees and may also earn commissions. Fee-only advisors are paid only by their clients. We are fee-only, which removes commission-driven conflicts from our advice. No compensation model is completely free of conflicts. For example, an asset-based fee means we earn more when more assets are under our management. We disclose these conflicts in our Form ADV and discuss them openly. We publish our fees, and every fee is reviewed with you and agreed to in writing before any work begins.
Simple+ Wealth Management: an annual advisory fee of 1.25% on the first $1,000,000 we manage and 0.80% on assets above $1,000,000. The tiers are progressive, so each rate applies only to assets within its range. Platform, custody, trading, and rebalancing costs are included. Underlying fund expenses are separate.
Ongoing Advice-Only Planning: a flat annual fee of $15,000 for most clients, based on scope and complexity. It is billed in installments and never deducted from your accounts.
Retirement Coordination Engagement™: a one-time project fee of $8,000 for most clients, covering up to six months of planning work.
Full details are on our Services and Fees page.

It is the process behind everything we do, and the subject of Jason's Amazon best-selling book. It starts from one observation: most retirement stress does not come from bad decisions. It comes from reasonable decisions made in isolation. A Roth conversion that ignores Medicare premiums can look fine on its own, and so can a withdrawal plan that ignores your tax bracket. Together they can still work against each other. The framework has four steps: Define Spending Capacity, Coordinate Income Sources, Integrate Tax Planning, and Re-Coordinate Over Time. See How We Help or get the book.

Yes, through our Simple+ Wealth Management service. Our approach is evidence-based. It draws on decades of academic research, global diversification, and the discipline to stay with a plan when markets get uncomfortable. We implement many client portfolios using Dimensional Fund Advisors funds. For clients drawing income, we often organize money by when it will be needed, using our Three Simple Buckets™ approach: Now, Soon, and Later. Where appropriate, we set up those buckets as separate investment strategies within your accounts. That way, the buckets in your plan match how your money is invested, and we manage the movement between them as one coordinated portfolio. The portfolio is built to serve your spending and tax plan. Read Our Investment Philosophy.
-
Your accounts are held in your name at an independent third-party custodian, not by our firm. Our authority is limited to managing your investments and, with your written agreement, deducting our advisory fee. You receive statements directly from the custodian and can view your accounts at any time. Advice-Only clients keep their accounts wherever they choose, and we never have access to them.
-
Tax planning is built into every plan we create. Before any decision is made, we model Roth conversions, required minimum distributions, Medicare IRMAA surcharges, and capital gains together, and we coordinate directly with your CPA. Qualifying Simple+ Wealth Management clients can also have their tax returns prepared through our outside tax partner, so planning and filing work from the same strategy. We are not a CPA firm and do not prepare returns in-house.
-
Yes. These are among the most common decisions we work through with clients, and we model them together because each one affects the others. That includes Roth conversion amounts and timing, Social Security claiming strategy with spousal and survivor benefits, and Medicare enrollment and IRMAA thresholds. To explore on your own first, try our Roth Conversion Calculator.

Both, though most of our clients choose an ongoing relationship. Retirement is not one decision. Tax rules change, markets move, and your plans shift. Simple+ Wealth Management includes a structured planning calendar each year: an Annual Retirement Planning Meeting, an optional Mid-Year Progress Review, and a Year-End Strategy Meeting, plus direct access to Jason between meetings. Clients who prefer to manage their own investments can choose Ongoing Advice-Only Planning. For those who want a defined starting point, the Retirement Coordination Engagement™ is a one-time project of up to six months.
-
Yes. Ongoing Advice-Only Planning is a flat-fee relationship in which we coordinate your income, tax, and retirement strategy and give you allocation recommendations to implement yourself. You keep full control of your accounts, and we never charge a percentage of your assets. This also suits people whose savings sit in a workplace 401(k) they cannot yet move.

Getting Started
-
The first conversation is complimentary. After you schedule, you will complete a short questionnaire so we can make the most of our time together. On the call, we talk through where you are, the decisions in front of you, and how we work. We do our best work with clients who are engaged in the process and open to advice. If we are a good fit, we will recommend the service that matches your situation and review the fee before you commit to anything. If we are not the right fit, we will tell you, and point you somewhere better when we can.
